Indian heiress Priyanka Gandhi has tea with Nalini - Who cares why
Political assasinations. Two words put together have never induced such adventurous thoughts in one’s head before. I have always been a sucker for political assasinations ever since I read “Day of the Jackal” by Frederick Forsyth sometime in my early school days. So it was with pleasant curiosity that I tuned into Headlines Today when I heard the news of Priyanka calling on Nalini for a chat. Headlines Today should be renamed to “Only Headline this week”. For that matter every news channel in India. I mean, what was wrong with them. Every channel I flipped to, there was only one “breaking” news. The only breaking the news did was to my good mood. Within the next 24 hours every newspaper, TV channel, blog was covering this piece.
Why did Priyanka visit Nalini? She said it was because she wanted to make peace and she did. But is that the whole story? Oh my God…she’s hiding something isn’t she? Did she know who the real killer was and went to Nalini to confirm her suspiscions? Or was she like - ooh! I’m going to meet my father’s assassin today, how exciting, I’ll go bungee jumping some other day.
“Analysts” went on air voicing their expert opinion on air. Some viewed it as a stunt by the Congress party in wake of the coming elections. Some claimed Priyanka was threatened by the LTTE (why? why? why?) and she went to Nalini to reassure herself she was safe. Some bugger lawyer actually sought information under the RTI to validate this. A blogger went ahead and cited four different possibilities ranging from inflation to the Gandhi brand. I had a few of my own:
- Maybe the LTTE had been wrongly framed for the assasination and Priyanka was working with the CIA, the Mossad and the Chinese Red Army to figure out who was really behind the attack.
- Maybe Rajiv Gandhi is still alive, hiding for some philanthropic reason in a luxurious five star bunker the entrance to which is beneath Nalini’s cell and is running the country from there. Priyanka just went to say Hi to daddy.
- Maybe that’s where a certain Swiss bank has it’s private secret vaults.
OK, I meant these in jest, please don’t get me arrested or assasinated.
The worst part, however was that like suckers, India watched. And I understood why the media went crazy reporting this. News like this sells, millions of folks living in their mundane existence need news like this to survive. I flipped channels for about 30 seconds before switching to my favorite HBO movie. 30 seconds was all the attention this was getting, slighly more than the attention that the shit, Ekta Kapoor doles out in the form of tearjerking-designer-families-saas-bahu serials.
At the end of the day who cares why Priyanka visited Nalini. Maybe it was personal, maybe it was a gimmick, maybe there were ulterior motives. But who the hell cares, why should anyone care. We have bigger things to worry about in this country, isn’t it high time we started focussing on them? Priyanka visiting Nalini shouldn’t have been a 9 sq inch article deeply entrenched within a daily. No way it deserved the attention it got. Shame on you news channels, least you should have done was respect the feelings of a lady whose father was brutally murdered. Shame on you.

AI,
Your thoughts on this please:

Why? during this modern age of Knowledge Management, accept old timers, i.e. school drop-outs, under-graduates without recognized teaching qualification as Professors, HOD’s, Deans and Vice Chancellors of Maritime University/ Academies / Institutions, with COC’s of set paper exams. Does this make sense? Instead, why not at least regulate the fees to enable the economically weaker section to gain admission on their merits, rather than depriving them. Who regulates the fees/ Salary of the faculty staff in Maritime Institutions/Academies/University? Is it the same ill conceived flock of same feathers? Various regulators actually did quite well, at acting in a coordinated fashion but unfortunately, they coordinated in the wrong direction.
As a citizen of India, in a sovereign democratic republic country after six long decades I don’t find in practice Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity ensuring the dignity of the individual and the unity of the nation that is enshrined in our national constitution. To file a suit, it takes beyond weeks and months for the same to be listed, but for the simple reasons of court clerk on leave. Once listed, the same is dragged for years on adjournments. The accused goes scot-free, with the help of changing politicians and unreliable advocates who collude with their colleagues of the opposite party. What would be the mental state of the common man? Similarly an employee appointed on an all India open advertisement, in government of India enterprise, can be thrown out of service, like a fish out of water, outspoken denied dignity, for no fault of his and be deprived of all benefits like VRS, medical disability benefit etc. includes the fair and final settlement Hence, why should it be wrong, to sneer at bureaucrats and officialdom for this state of affairs, when they appear to be practicing unfairness to ones basic rights of natural justice. Is it not the people’s government? Continuous meddling in areas of one’s personal life is wrong; they seem to know nothing about, cause’s harassment of irritation and humiliation. Not only that, it’s an important expression of widely accepted democratic freedoms that the people can express dissent about unfair rules of practice. By swimming with hungry crocodiles I know is not most people’s idea of thrill and fun, which I have undertaken, in the general interest of seafarer’s welfare, which is though a selfless and thankless job. My mission was to expose the reality, while they continue to be clouded instead of transparency, during this RTI age.
